Our most popular Tibet itinerary is the Friendship Highway — 11 Days Lhasa to Kathmandu overland with Everest Base Camp.

Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet

In Lhasa, you will visit the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Drepung and Sera Monasteries. Besides the sites in Lhasa, we will visit the monasteries and temples in Gyantse and Shigatse. From Rongbuk, we can see the north face of Everest, certainly the best vantage point to view the world’s highest mountain. Dear Adventurous Ones,

John Bellezza in Tibet

John Bellezza in Tibet

The adventure to Tibet to see its ancient wonders draws tantalizingly near. This is a wonderful opportunity to join me and see large swathes of Tibetan culture and history that few others have seen. The scenery is a joy to behold and the people a real delight. It is a challenging journey but one with many rewards for those who are willing to make the effort. If you can, I encourage you to sign up and be a part of this unique odyssey to Tibet.

Warm Regards,

John Bellezza

John Vincent Bellezza is a visiting scholar at the University of Virginia where he specializes in the pre-Buddhist phase of Tibetan civilization. Bellezza, a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies and Explorer’s Club, has spent 25 years exploring the most remote parts of the Great Western Himalaya and Tibet. No ordinary academic, John is a great story teller and entertainer, skills he developed during his long years of wandering around the Himalaya. His latest book, “Zhang Zhung: Foundations of Civilization in Tibet”, provides comprehensive treatment of the pre-Buddhist civilization he discovered single-handedly.

“I was really very impressed with him as a guide. John is totally professional, but fun and flexible. He knows everyone in Nepal and Tibet and showed us things we would have never seen on most trips. He always watched out for every person, coming up the rear of treks, negotiating for people, and giving frequent informational talks. I’ve been on many pilgrimages and treks and John’s pilgrimages still stand out as the most special.”

Samye Monastery, Lhasa

Samye Monastery, Lhasa

This is an unique opportunity to see Tibetan civilization in all its splendor with John Vincent Bellezza, one of the world’s leading authorities. From Buddhist monasteries to Eurasian animal art, this journey reveals Tibet in all her depth. John, an affable, sensitive and highly experienced expeditionary and tour leader, will guide a select group of people to Tibet’s rarest cultural treasures. John, who has spent a quarter of a century intensively exploring the Himalaya and Tibetan Plateau, will share some of his most brilliant discoveries with us for the very first time.
This is an unparalleled view of Tibet, providing extraordinary insights into the culture and people of this charmed land. In addition, to visiting the great heritage sites, there will be plenty of time to get to know the Tibetans and enjoy their fun-loving spirit. John, who is fluent in various Tibetan dialects, encourages his fellow travelers to intensively interact with the Tibetans and ask those questions one has stored up for years. And what better way to get answers than to ask the people themselves.

The journey begins in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal and the heart of the Himalaya. With John, we will spend two days exploring special cultural sites in the Kathmandu valley. At Changu Narayan, Swoyambhunath and the old city state of Bhaktapur, witness how Himalayan civilization took root and grew layer by layer into its present form. In addition to visiting well known Hindu and Buddhist places, John will lead us to hardly-known Iron Age sites, where we can appreciate the links between the Newar and Tibetan cultures before the rise of Sanskrit influences. We will have plenty of time to chat with the experts and ordinary people of all persuasions.

After three days we fly to Lhasa, Tibet’s famous capital. We will visit a rich array of cultural and archaeological treasures throughout the area. John will lead us to spectacular places such as the Potala and Jokhang, revealing their most ancient aspects. There will also be time to explore fascinating pilgrimage sites on the edge of the Lhasa valley. En route to Shigatse, Tibet’s second city, we will stop at the most important monasteries of the Bon religion. While there are many superficial similarities, through art, design and literature, John will show us how Bon and Buddhism differ from one another.

In Shigatse we will have time to see the city’s greatest spectacles, gaining a deeper appreciation of the depth and breadth of Tibetan civilization. From Shigatse we will head north through the majestic Transhimalaya range. In the Shang valley we will pass a string of Buddhist centers and natural power sites. At Sokpo see one of the region’s greatest cave hermitages and have a chance to talk to the inhabitants.

Above Sokpo, we traverse the Transhimalaya and enter the vast plains of the Changthang, Tibet’s empty northern quarter. Yet, it is not as empty as it first seems. Hidden away in sheltered valleys and on escarpments are the remnants of the early inhabitants of the region. At places such as Mutig and Shawa Drag, these ancient hermitages have devolved to the Buddhists. Here is a great opportunity to peel back the strata of Tibetan civilization and come to better understand its march over the millennia.

On the Changthang, John will introduce us to the drokpa nomads, some of whom he has known for over 20 years. We will get to know their way of life, interests and aspirations as can be shown only by someone who has long lived among them. We will move in an eastern direction, stopping at key archaeological and cultural sites along the way. Our Changthang adventure will culminate in Nam Tsho, the Celestial Lake (an object of study in John’s first book, Divine Dyads). Not only is Nam Tsho very beautiful (she is envisioned as a young goddess), she is home to a stunning series of sacred headlands and islands dating back 3000 years and more. It is an easy return drive to Lhasa via the southeast corner of Nam Tsho. From Lhasa we return to Kathmandu so that the participants can catch their outbound flights.

FRIENDSHIP HIGHWAY

The first stop along the Friendship Highway is Kampa La Pass with magnificent views of Turquoise Lake.  It is one of the largest and most sacred lakes in Tibet and a great spot for getting your picture taken atop a local yak.

In’s and Out’s of Getting a Tibet Permit

July 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

With all the travel to China for the Olympics, the rules have changed to get a Chinese visa, which impacts many people traveling to Tibet.  Here is everything you need to know to get your Tibet travel permit and your Chinese visa.

Tibet

All travelers going to Tibet will need a travel permit for Tibet, which must be arranged for you by a local tour operator. If you are traveling through China to get to Tibet, you will also need to get a Chinese visa ahead of time. If you are traveling through Nepal, then you do not get a Chinese visa ahead of time.

The travel permit to Tibet will be handled for you as they can only be issued in Nepal or China. The visa is $135/person for U.S. citizens and $45/person for all other countries, subject to change.

China

The Chinese visa must be acquired before arrival if you are flying through a Chinese city that is not Lhasa.

You either need to apply for your visa at a Chinese visa consulate in person, or you need to use a visa service (you cannot mail in for a visa).

You will need to send in the following to apply for your Chinese visa:

  1. Passport – must be valid for at least 6 months after your trip and must have at least 2 blank pages (remember you may need more blank pages if you are going to Nepal or Bhutan or elsewhere).
  2. Chinese visa application form – do not mention Tibet or Hong Kong on your application form or it will be denied. You must list your hotel and contact information.
  3. Flight itinerary – must show flight into Chengdu, no exit flight is necessary.
  4. Hotel confirmation – we will send you this for your hotel in Chengdu.
  5. One passport size photo — 2” x 2” on white background.
  6. Visa service application form
  7. Photocopies of all documents – keep on file.

Unless you are requesting rush service, allow 7 business days for processing, which does not include shipping time. We recommend that you send your visa application by FedEx or certified mail to protect your passport.

Tour the Himalayas with scholar John Bellezza

July 25, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Adventures Within Reach is offering two trips with archaeologist John Bellezza in 2009 — one to remote regions of Tibet in May and one to the forbidden kingdom of Mustang, Nepal in September.

The Tibet Looking Glass trip is a unique opportunity to see Tibetan civilization in all its splendor with John Vincent Bellezza, one of the world’s leading authorities. From Buddhist monasteries to Eurasian animal art, this journey reveals Tibet in all her depth.

The Mustang trip gives you the opportunity to go to the places where few have been before. Most of the trek keeps to arid, high deserts inhabited mostly by people of Tibetan stock. The men folk are either traders or farmers while the women mostly tend the fields. Along with insights into the everyday lives of the people of “Lo” you will have the opportunity to witness their vibrant culture and also a chance to get a look at Lamaistic Buddhism little changed by time.

Tibet Reopens to Foreign Tourists

June 26, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Happy days are back in Tibet! Tibet reopened to foreign tourists on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 after a 3 month closure.

Chinese tourists have been traveling to the region since April 23, and all has been peaceful in the area.

Most tourists sites are open including the Jokhang, Ramoche, and Sera monasteries. Drepung, Ganden, Samye, and Tsedang remain closed temporarily.

Entry must be made through China (typically Chengdu) or Kathmandu via air or land. Currently Air China has flights between Kathmandu and Lhasa on Saturdays only.

Rules have changed for getting a Chinese visa >>

Tourism money is greatly needed in this area to help support the local people, many of whom have not had work during the tourist closure. All of our Tibet trips for the rest of the summer and fall will go on as planned.
